FR4GZ

frag /fræɡ/ noun, verb: a kill in a multiplayer shooter. To frag someone is to take them out.

Classic frag movies, the plays esports crowds still talk about, the slang you hear in voice chat, and how a grim bit of military slang became gaming's favourite word.

Dictionary

What is a frag?

In gaming, a frag is a kill, usually in a first-person shooter. Doom and Quake counted frags in deathmatch, so the word stuck, and players still say they fragged someone, went on a fragging spree or watched a frag movie.

The word is older and darker than games. It comes from the fragmentation grenade, and in US military slang from the Vietnam War, fragging meant deliberately attacking a fellow soldier, often a superior officer, with one. Gamers borrowed the word in the 1990s and turned it into something far less serious.

A frag movie is an edited video of a player's best kills, usually set to music. They started in the Quake and Counter-Strike communities, where players recorded demo files of their games and cut the highlights together.

Why is it spelt fr4gz?
